Wine Review. Fit for a Princess!

Fit for a Princess!
Banfi Principessa Gavia Gavi has just joined the VINTAGES Essentials Collection!

Gavi is the zesty white wine from the southern area of Piedmont, in Northwestern Italy. The region is famous for its rich red Barolo wines.

Banfi Principessa Gavia Gavi is made from 100% cortese grapes, often called Cortese di Gavi. This is an indigenous variety of the area and has been growing there for over 400 years.

Banfi established the Principessa Gavia estate and vineyards in 1979 to grow cortese di gavi grapes exclusively. It is one of the oldest brands from Banfi and has been produced since 1995.

The name Principessa Gavia is inspired by a legend about the princess herself. As the story goes, she fell in love with a soldier and her father did not support the marriage. The two decided to run away together and settled in a tiny village far away from the king. Eventually they were discovered and returned to the king to face their punishment. The king, seeing how in love they were, forgave them and supported their marriage. As a wedding gift, he bequeathed them the town where they had lived. In her honour, both the town and the white wine of the area were called Gavi.

This is a perfect summer wine, and a refreshing alternative to sauvignon blanc or pinot grigio.

It is a crisp, racy, fresh wine with a slight touch of effervescence. It has green apple and citrus aromas and flavours. It is light to medium bodied with a tart, clean, lasting finish.

Serve as an aperitif, or with salads, fish dishes, Thai food, and feta cheese.

Cheers,

Shari 🥂
