Wine Picks

Shari’s Picks for December!

Wow! December is upon us, and 2023 is drawing to a close.

I have three wine picks that make tasty gifts for you AND the recipient!

One of my favourite sparkling wines from Ontario is Cuvée Catharine from Henry of Pelham in Niagara. Released in VINTAGES last month is Pelham’s best cuvée, Henry of Pelham Cuvée Catharine Estate Blanc de Blancs “Carte Blanche” 2017This first-class example of white sparkling wine is as fine as most vintage Champagnes. This delicious fizz has forward notes of fresh bread, with apple flavours and a zesty lingering finish. Serve this sparkler as a cocktail and with a wide section of foods, ranging from caviar to roast chicken. Beautifully packaged, and for less than $100 for two bottles, perhaps you can enjoy one Henry of Pelham Cuvée Catharine Estate Blanc de Blancs “Carte Blanche” 2017 for yourself and give one as a gift!

Henry of Pelham Cuvée Catharine Estate Blanc de Blancs “Carte Blanche” 2017| VQA, Short Hills Bench, Ontario | 750 mL | 12 % alc | sugar  6 g/L | cork finish | VINTAGES +315200 | $49.95

I have a weak spot for Pinot Noir. Enjoying an elegant Pinot Noir is an indulgent treat! I was excited to see the latest version of Le Clos Jordanne Le Grand Clos Pinot Noir 2020 released in VINTAGES in November. Le Grand Clos is the top wine of the Le Clos Jordanne range and is spectacular. Thomas Bachelder works his magic yet again! The wine is aromatic with forward aromas of ripe cherries and raspberries, followed by a lingering, spicy finish and soft, integrated tannins. Serve Le Clos Jordanne Le Grand Clos Pinot Noir 2020 with beef dishes, Coq au Vin or mushrooms sautéed in butter. Shop early! This beauty won’t last long.

Le Clos Jordanne Le Grand Clos Pinot Noir 2020 | VQA Twenty Mile Bench, Ontario | 750 mL | 13.5 % alc | sugar 2 g/L | screwcap | VINTAGES 184564 | $49.95

At this time of the year, I look for white wines with body and punch. I am pleased to share that Trimbach Pinot Blanc 2022 will be available in VINTAGES on December 16. Trimbach is a family winery that has been producing wines since 1626 in Ribeauvillé, Alsace. This northern wine region is a beautiful, less famous area of France. My web search shows Pinot Blanc is the eighth most popular white wine. I think it deserves more attention! I often consider Pinot Blanc as a substitute for the most popular white wine, Chardonnay. Trimbach Pinot Blanc 2022 is balanced with rich floral aromas, a medium body with creamy peach flavours and fresh acidity. Serve with hors d’oeuvres, shellfish, salads and pasta with cream sauce.

Trimbach Pinot Blanc 2022 | Alsace, France | 750 mL | 13 % alc | sugar 6 g/L | screwcap | VINTAGES +15381 | $24.95

I hope you enjoy the journey through this year’s holiday celebrations with some delicious wines!

Cheers,

Shari 🥂
